Join the DEG Book Club on Tuesday, 21 April at 6:30 pm at the Bürgerbegegnungsstätte Bayreuth for our next meeting, where we will be discussing What We Can Know by Ian McEwan.
Spanning past and future, the novel weaves together literary mystery, speculative fiction, and a deeply human exploration of memory, relationships, and truth. Moving between a near-future world shaped by climate change and the early 21st century, the story centres on a puzzling poem and the lives it quietly entangles. As one character attempts to reconstruct its origins, the narrative raises compelling questions about interpretation, authorship, and the reliability of what we think we know.
At its core, What We Can Know reflects on the limits of knowledge itself: how accurately can we ever understand the past, other people, or even our own motivations? It also touches on themes of environmental responsibility, hindsight, and the ways in which societies remember — or misremember — their turning points.
Whether you have read the book in full or are simply curious, you are very welcome to join us. Expect a thoughtful and open discussion in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
We look forward to seeing you there.
